Pest Control Marketing involves personal growth and continuous learning in order to be successful

Pest control marketing is just about all I do these days. I no longer own and operate a pest control business myself, but I work with small to medium sized pest control companies all over The USA plus I’ve worked with PCOs in Australia and The UK as well.

In my 44 years in the industry, I’ve noticed lots of changes (no surprise). I’ve been a great observer due to my love of people watching. I’ve made lots of notes, hung out with lots of both successful and unsuccessful PCOs.

One thing I can tell you for a FACT is this: When it comes to success, those individuals who are the most proactive and aggressive learners are the ones who invariably end up on top.

Successful PCOs have develops successful habits. They have developed what I refer to as “Caveman Mentality”, meaning they pursue new customers the same way the caveman pursued food. It was on his mind day and night and he knew his very life and existence depended on being able to get another animal on the ground.

Successful PCOs…

  • Read books
  • Attend workshops
  • Listen to audio CDS
  • Watch DVDs
  • Invest in training
  • Have mentors
  • Invest in education
  • Never stop finding better ways to get more customers

I once made a suggestion to a PCO that he read a certain book on selling and his reply was, “Read a book?  I wish I had time to read a book”.

My response was…”You should make time if you want to grow your business and be more successful”.

If you think you already know everything you need to know to be successful, you are only kidding yourself.

Why?  Because things change. Economies change. Customers change. Cultures change. Technology changes.

And if you don’t keep up with it, you will fall behind more and more as time goes by.

If you want to create a GROWING, THRIVING…and PROFITABLE business…you must be a constant learner.  You will never be able to just figure it all out on your own.

That is what successful pest control marketing is all about.

Build A Better Mousetrap

When it comes to YOUR business…do you think YOU have a better mousetrap?

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door!”

Well…not if they don’t know you have it. And they must clearly understand why it is better than all of the other mousetraps.  They must clearly understand the benefit of purchasing YOUR mousetrap.

Obviously YOU know why it’s better, but if you can’t effectively convey it to your prospective customers, they probably won’t buy from you.

This is the number one reason why most small business owners…including pest control operators, roofers, plumbers, electricians, HVAC and other home service businesses …leave a lot of money on the table that they otherwise could have put in the bank.

Here’s a FACT (Most business owners hate to hear this one): People out there in the real world couldn’t care less about you and your company.   It is totally meaningless to them in the grand scheme of things.

What they do care about is this:

  • What is it that you really do?
  • What can you do for THEM?
  • What do you have to offer THEM?
  • What problem can you solve for THEM?
  • What pain can you alleviate for THEM?
  • How can you improve the quality of THEIR lives and/or THEIR businesses?
  • How can you add to THEIR bottom line?
  • How can you make THEM smile?
  • WIIFM (What’s in it for ME?)

They only care about THEM. They don’t care about YOU. Sorry but it’s true (Elmo, the subconscious mind, is extremely self-centered)!

You must know what it is…exactly…that your prospective customer wants and then give it to them.

And it’s very important that you give them MORE than what they expected.

If you’re in the pest control business, you’re not in the business of selling dead bugs. You are actually selling PEACE OF MIND.

  • You are taking away their fears and concerns about damages to their homes and property.
  • You are removing the threats of serious diseases or harm to their families and/or pets from any types of invading pests.
  • You are protecting them from harm…both physical and financial.
  • You are helping them sleep better at night.
  • You are providing a source of dependable information.
  • You are improving the quality of their lives.
  • You are an advocate on their behalf.
  • You are a trusted advisor.
  • You are a dependable friend.

“Dead bugs” can get you in the door but it certainly won’t keep you there…not by a long shot.

There are a thousand and one other pest control companies out there who can get rid of the bugs. If that’s all you have to offer, you become just another commodity and you will almost always lose out to a lower price or a better offer.  You simply can’t compete for long at that level. It is non-sustainable.

Bottom line:  You need to figure out what it is you can do for your customers that no other company can do.  Find a way to be different.  Then make sure they clearly understand the difference and how it directly benefits them.

Once you can do that, you are well on your way to harvesting lots more referrals and lots more new customers!

Pest Control Marketing – I wish you were here with me

Where am I?

Answer: I’m attending the Annual Georgia Pest Control Association Summer Conference this week in Palm Coast, Florida. And I truly love this event. It’s like a family reunion to me. Old home week. Lots and lots of dear old friends that I that I only get to see once or twice a year at a conference.

I actually attend about 5 or 6 pest control conferences each year. I usually am a speaker at several of those.  But, I’m also there to learn and get training and credit hours for my pest control certification renewal also.

Each year I attend conferences, online and offline workshops, live webinars, online seminars, as well as private coaching sessions with MY success coach.  That’s right…I have my own success coach who I pay a LOT of $$ to help keep me on course with my coaching business and make sure I am delivering the absolute best of quality to MY CLIENTS. That insures that my business is successful and keeps me moving forward, closer to my own dreams.

I have observed through the years that the business owners and sales people who spend the most time and effort on knowledge and learning are the ones who achieve the highest levels of achievement and success in their businesses. They also end up making the most money!

Business owners who invest little or no time in knowledge and learning (other than the required CE credits) are the ones who end up with slow or no business growth and struggle to maintain what they have. They are also generally the ones who have contempt and disdain for the more successful companies. They are most often the ones who don’t invest in learning because they already know everything there is to know…at least in their own minds.
